NewFest 2006 comes to a close with this fresh musical comedy fantasy combining the Hollywood musical, Almodovarean high-camp, and neo-realism to introduce audiences to Marieta, who could be the hitherto unknown lovechild of Hedwig and My Own Private Idaho’s Mike Waters.
Pre-op MTF Marieta was born Adolfo – but she yearns to be rid of both that name and of the other rather substantial reminder of her biological maleness – the titular 20 centimeters she hides under her dress. She works the streets to earn the money for her surgery – she can’t get a more traditional job because, to add to her woes, Marieta suffers from narcolepsy. But when she falls asleep in the dour real world, she awakens in a wildly imaginative dream realm, where she is the star of her own perfectly choreographed Technicolor musicals, surrounded by tons of handsome men.
After one such narcoleptic episode, Marieta awakens to find herself rescued by hunky Raul, a fruit stocker in the local market. As they begin a passionate sexual relationship, Marieta faces a big dilemma: Raul is into her body, 20 centimeters and all... Should she continue with her plans for surgery, even though it may mean the end of her affair with Raul?
