This eagerly awaited comedy serves as a perfect kick off NewFest 2006 – bringing all of the humor and intelligence of the critically acclaimed television series to the big screen. And for any unfortunate souls who haven’t seen the show – don’t fear, this is a – prequel – and everything you need to know is here. Meet Jerri Blank (Amy Sedaris), a 47-year-old junky whore who, upon her release from prison, returns home after 32 years as a runaway. Wracked with guilt when she learns her absence caused her father to slip into a coma, Jerri decides to turn a new leaf to hopefully snap him back to reality, so she picks up her life exactly where she left off – as a high school freshman. She soon discovers that high school isn’t much different from prison, and is loaded with problems and temptations that are especially difficult for a not particularly selective former boozer, user, and loser to resist.
Amy Sedaris never fails to impress with her uncanny ability to so fully inhabit the wonderfully grotesque comic role of Jerri Blank. Together with her co-stars and co-screenwriters Stephen Colbert and Paul Dinello - who play squabbling teachers who are also gay lovers - Sedaris brilliantly and irreverently skewers the conventions of high school comedy with delicious satire and jaw-dropping innuendo. Directed by Paul Dinello, and also featuring a host of talented actors, including Allison Janney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Kristen Johnston, Sir Ian Holm, Matthew Broderick, and Sarah Jessica Parker, you’ll want to accept this candy from these strangers!
