The legacy of colonialism in Fiji led to a tragic end for gay couple John Scott and Greg Scrivener, who were brutally murdered in 2001. The Scotts, part of a long line of prominent white colonial Fijians, enjoyed privilege and status not afforded to the indigenous people. Post-independence, John attempted to rectify this by serving the island as the Director General of the Fiji Red Cross. But political unrest and the influence of evangelical Christianity combined to target John and his lover as victims of a horrific hate crime. An Island Calling follows John’s brother, Owen, as he returns to Fiji to investigate the complex circumstances behind John’s death.  More...

In his remarkable, meditative feature documentary debut, Taylor Greeson displays the self-confidence and craftsmanship of a veteran filmmaker while revisiting a complex and formative time in his life. At 12 years old, Taylor experienced three events over the course of one summer that had a profound affect on his life – he embraced Mormonism, began a secret sexual relationship with an older man, and was forced to cope with his brother’s murder. His struggle with faith, sexuality, and loss form the roadmap to Meadowlark, as Taylor bridges these themes together, culminating in intimate conversations with the men who took his virginity and killed his brother.  More...

This award-winning British TV series focuses on 15-year-old Kim and her desperate crush on her sexy and fabulous best friend, Maria Sweet, AKA Sugar. Kim also contends with her dysfunctional, embarrassing family, and life in her new home in Brighton. Experiencing forbidden love (or lust) for the first time, Kim forges her own path through life. Her wry observations and bad girl ways have made her a popular anti-heroine for young British lesbians, demonstrating what it’s like to be young and queer in the UK today.  More...

Were the World Mine
(USA, 2008, 96 mins)
Features
Sunday, June 15th 8:00pm
AMC Loews 34th St Theater 7
$50.00

NewFest was pleased to screen writer/director Tom Gustafson’s short film, Fairies, in the 2004 festival. In early 2006, we presented the feature-length expansion of that film in a staged screenplay reading - a precursor to our new NewDraft series. We are excited to bring NewFest 2008 to a close with the completed feature, Were the World Mine. Timothy (Tanner Cohen) is a cute gay outcast at an all-boys prep school with a serious crush on handsome jock, Jonathon (Nathaniel David Becker), who fuels his technicolor musical theatre style daydreams. Recognizing Timothy’s potential to realize his dreams is the eccentric drama teacher, Ms Tebbit (Wendy Robie, Nadine from Twin Peaks), who convinces him to audition for the school’s staging of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Perfectly cast as the mischievous sprite, Puck, Timothy is delighted to discover that Jonathon will share the stage with him. Jonathon’s homophobic coach, on the other hand, is decidedly less than thrilled with the idea that his boys will be prancing around on stage – some even playing female roles! Against this backdrop, with no real support aside from Ms Tebbit and his best friend Frankie (Zelda Williams, daughter of Robin Williams), Timothy nevertheless pushes forward. Inspired by the play to whip up a batch of love potion, he’s surprised when it unexpectedly works – only too well. Not only has he made Jonathon fall in love with him, but the rest of his small town seems to be under the spell as well! Fantasy and reality collide, bringing wonderfully queer Shakespearean revelry in this fun, whimsical, and audience-award winning production full of song, dance, and an incredibly talented young cast.  More...
